Description
This trail climbs from Road 2904 for 1 mile to the junction with Tongue Mountain Lookout Trail No. 294A, a 0.7-mile trail to the core of an extinct volcano. The spur trail No. 294A to the summit is steep and at times resembles a rock scramble. Please use caution. You can get excellent views from the saddle, without hiking to the summit. The spur trail is open to hikers only. Trail No. 294 descends after the junction with No. 294A, on a long rim overlooking the Cispus River Valley with views of Burley Mountain, Tower Rock, Mt. Rainier, Mt. Adams and Mount St. Helens. The trail ends on Road 2801.
Tongue Mountain was a traditional mountain goat hunting site for the Taidnapam Indians. The 4,838foot summit offers excellent views of the central portion of the Randle District and south to Mt. Adams.
Trail 294A is closed to motorized use
