Description

Portions of this trail correspond to an Indian trail that began on the Cowlitz River and climbed Pompey Peak to join the Klickitat Trail. This trail begins at Road 2304. After a 1.7-mile climb around the peak, the trail intersects with Pompey Lookout Trail No. 128A, a short spur to the summit. Continuing east, the main trail enters an open subalpine ridge near the base of Twin Sisters Peak, ending on Trail No. 7.

Features include views of the Cowlitz Valley, Rainier, St. Helens and Adams, which can all be seen from the summit of Pompey Peak. Much of this trail passes through a beautiful oldgrowth forest. Pompey Peak was named for a pack mule belonging to A.W. Joerk. The mule fell to its death on the upper part of the trail in the 1890s. A fire lookout was built on the summit of Pompey Peak in 1934. It was later abandoned and destroyed. The section of trail originating from Cline Road is not being maintained because the trailhead is on private property.
