Moscow, Idaho Travel Guide

Complete Vacation, Recreation and Tourism Information

Moscow (pop. 20,000), located in the rolling hills of the Palouse in northern Idaho, is the quintessential western college town. Friendly residents and eclectic shops provide a welcome flavor of the west coast in the middle of these picturesque farmlands.

Home to the University of Idaho, which enrolls or employs well over half the town's population, Moscow is also just ten miles away from Washington State University across the state line. Bookstores, theatre companies, coffee shops, and brewpubs line the streets near the university, creating a pleasant neighborhood buffered from the town's main thoroughfares. Moscow is also home to the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, one of the most acclaimed annual gatherings of jazz performers in the world.

Unlike many of Idaho's young cities just barely celebrating a centennial, Moscow was founded in 1869. The colonial-style houses and tree-lined streets of downtown preserve some of the pioneering spirit of the area's early settlers. Ten city parks help invite some of the natural beauty of the surroundings into town, and recreation opportunities in the nearby countryside are plentiful.

Moscow is located in northwestern Idaho, a few miles east of the border with Washington. For more information about Moscow, please select an area of interest from the buttons on the left.
