Description
The Langille Ridge Trail can be accessed from Road 2809, Rough Trail No. 283, or Boundary Trail #1. From the north end, the trail begins on Road 2809 and heads steadily up the ridge through dense stands for 2 miles. The trail skirts Langille Peak and opens onto the ridgeline. The trail passes a small spring and pond before tying into McCoy Peak (at 5 miles). Trail No. 259A is a short, primitive trail that is hard to follow at times. After the junction, Langille Ridge Trail drops into a noble fir and hemlock forest to the junction of Rough Trail No. 283. The trail continues on past Holdaway Butte before intersecting with Boundary Trail No. 1.
Langille has many ridgetop views and is a good opportunity for backpacking trips. Mountain goats are common in the McCoy Peak area. The trail was named after Jim Langille, a prospector here during the early 1900s. Day hikes can be made to the ridge, where you will often be rewarded with views, wildflowers and huckleberries.
Steep with exposures. The 2809 bridge is washed out, users must ford Yellowjacket Creek, which may be 2-3 feet deep at low water.
