Description

The St. Joe River stretches from 120 miles across northern Idaho to Lake Coeur d'Alene. While its tranquil flow near the lake gives it the nickname "Shadowy St. Joe," at the headwaters near the Montana border the St. Joe serves up a brief but thrilling season of intermediate whitewater adventure.

After launching from near Gold Creek, paddle trips head downstream on a gurgling green river, lined by cedars and moss-covered banks and populated by many large cutthroat trout. The St. Joe is designated a National Wild and Scenic River, in recognition of its natural beauty and to protect it for future generations.

Depending on the runoff level, the river can be an excellent stretch for beginning paddle rafters to learn the ropes, with Class III rapids providing excitement but minimal danger.

The whitewater continue for some 12 to 16 miles before the river begins to settle down, enough mileage for an exciting full day trip.
