Description
This trail is a former section of the Pacific Crest Trail which was relocated in the 1970s to skirt the lower west flank of Sawtooth Mountain. Taking the Pacific Crest Trail from the north, the Sawtooth Trail climbs steadily to the base of the 5,353-foot-high ridge of Sawtooth Mountain. The trail levels out and then continues on the west side of the summit, staying about 100 feet below the top. The trail offers views of Mt. Rainier, Mount St. Helens, and Lone Butte (a volcano core). At the south end of the ridge, the trail drops back down to the Pacific Crest Trail.
Sawtooth Mountain is a shield volcano and is one of the most prominent features in the northern part of Indian Heaven Wilderness.
Climbing rocks at Sawtooth is hazardous. Please stay on the trail.
