Description
The trail heads south from Snoqualmie Pass, across open ski slopes that offer good views to the north before cresting the hill and dropping into the forest.
This is one of the most beautiful and most crowded sections of the 2,620-mile long Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail. The trail ascends through forest and passes the Commonwealth Basin Trail at 2.75 miles. Switchbacks continue up around Kendall Ridge to the Kendall Katwalk, a section of blasted-out solid granite. This section is treacherous when snow-covered or icy. The Katwalk (at 5.5 miles) is a good turnaround point for day hikers. Backpackers can continue along heather meadows to the saddle between tiny Ridge and Gravel Lakes where the first campsites can be found. At this point (7.5 miles) the trail leaves the district and continues north to Stevens Pass and beyond.
