Description

6.7 miles in length (4.1 miles from Road No. 190 or 5.3 miles from Road No. 2760 to top). Grade is 20% first 3 milesto within 0.5 mile of summit. Mt. Townsend is along broad summit. The trail along the summitranges from flat up to 8% grades.

Small parking area bothtrailheads, limited turn around on upper trailheadfor horse trailer, not recommended. Three-sidedtrail shelter at Sink Lake. No toilets.

Conifer forest, wildflowers,meadows, and spectacular mountain views.

Hiking, horseback riding,backpacking, viewing wildflowers and scenery.This trail is heavily wooded the first few milesand opens up to meadows and spectacularmountain views. Campsites are located at WindyLakes and Silver Lakes. Please use existingcampsites when possible and camp at least 100 feet from water sources. Treat all water beforedrinking. Please pack out what you pack in.

Motorized vehicles and mountainbicycles are prohibited. No open campfirespermitted above 3,500 feet in the BuckhornWilderness, stoves only.

Basic Directions

Mt. Townsend trail #839 starts 15miles northwest of Quilcene on Forest ServiceRoad #2760 or 17 miles at FS Road #190. Onemile south of Quilcene, turn right onto PennyCreek Road for 1.4 miles staying left at the “Y”,continue on to the FS boundary and paved FSRoad #27. Proceed on FS #27 another 10.6miles to FS Road #2760. Follow #2760 for 0.7mile to the lower trailhead. To go to the uppertrailhead stay on #27 one more mile and turn leftonto Road #190. Follow #190 one mile to thesmall trailhead parking lot at the end of the road.
