Description
This is mostly a high ridge route varying from lodgepole pine forest to open Douglas fir and spruce, to open meadows and alpine areas up and over Windy Peak. Trail No. 533 near the north side of Sunny Pass.
There are outstanding views from near Windy Peak. A short side trail leads to the old lookout site on the summit. There are junctions with the Clutch Creek Trail No. 343, Basin Creek 360, and Boundary Trail No. 533, making several loop trips possible. Horse feed is abundant on this trail. Mule deer can be seen in the evening coming down from the peaks to feed.
This trail should be considered more difficult for stock due to tread slippage on steep side slopes. Sections of the trail near Windy Peak often do not melt out until late July.
No motorized or mechanized vehicles. Wilderness use restrictions apply.
Northwest Forest Pass required. Stock ramp, hitch rail, campground, and pit toilets.
