Union, South Carolina Travel Guide

Complete Vacation, Recreation and Tourism Information

Union, South Carolina was named after Union Church, a church that served people of varied religious beliefs during the Colonial era. Union serves as the county seat for Union County, and can be found in the northwestern part of the state.

Union is a small community; with a downtown that displays narrow two and three story brick and clapboard buildings in varied condition. You won't find many hip bistros, high-end boutiques or gourmet coffee houses here, but you will discover a genuine piece of rural America.

Two not-to-miss architectural wonders are the Union County Carnegie Library, and the Union County Courthouse. The library was the very first given away by Andrew Carnegie in South Carolina. Completed in 1905, its yellow hued brick and large white columns make it a standout. The courthouse is designed in the neo-classical style- making a dramatic (but magnificent) contrast to most of the town.

The Union County Museum is a wonderful place to discover an extensive display of artifacts, and comprehensive collection of historical books and maps. Rose Hill Plantation offers an interactive way to explore the prosperous Antebellum lifestyle enjoyed by many during cottons hey-day.

Four rivers (Broad, Tyger, Pacolet and Enoree) flow through the Union region- making fishing, boating, and hunting very popular past-times. The John D. Long Lake is said to offer exceptional fishing.

Union is located off Interstate 26, about 15 miles southeast of Spartanburg, and about 25 miles southwest of Rock Hill.
