Lander(pop 6900) is a quaint town, bordering the eastern slope of the Wind River Range and the banks of the meandering Popo Agie River. Due to its proximity to a variety of high quality recreational playgrounds, Lander is an increasingly popular place for many young, outdoor minded individuals to call home. Originally founded as an army outpost, once a haunt of such western persona as Butch Cassidy and nationally famous for its bronze foundry and Jade mining, Lander is now the headquarters of several internationally recognized organizations with a focus on recreation and preservation in the outdoors; the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) and the Nature Conservancy. With the amazing hiking opportunities afforded by the wilderness areas of the Wind River range, its location at the southern trailhead for the Continental Divide Snowmobile Trail which extends 365 miles north to Yellowstone National park, and its easy access to the geological wonders as Wild Iris and Sinks Canyon State Park possessing some of the most dramatic sport climbing in the nation, Lander offers a plethora of recreational opportunity for a variety kinds of outdoor enthusiasts.

Lander sits at the crossroads of several highway systems and is best accessed by automobile. From the south, visitors can access Lander via I-80 from the west through Rock Springs by way of US route 191 to state route 28 or from the east through Rawlins via US route 287. From the north and west, Lander is accessed easily via US route 287 from Moran Junction (Teton National Park) through the Wind River Indian Reservation. From the east, Lander is accessed through Casper on US route 26 via Riverton. Lander has a wide variety of accommodation options for visitors on any type of budget, including 'on the cheap' motels, Bed & Breakfasts, guesthouses, cabins and outdoor adventure inspired guest ranches. Visitors will be impressed by the variety and excellent quality of eating establishments available in Lander, the number and high quality influenced by the great number of young and vibrant individuals that call this area home.
