The Toutle River’s silty waters flow through the blast zone created by the 1980 Mt. St. Helens volcanic eruption. With banks still scarred from mudslides that devastated the area during this cataclysmic disaster, the Toutle continues to flow with great force through two gorges, with advanced intermediate level rapids that pack a powerful punch.
Big boulders choke the flow of the Toutle, creating large waves and big hydraulics sure to get the adrenaline rolling. Nature is slowly revegitating the area, though shattered remnants of houses decimated by the eruption still stand on the river banks. Fed primarily by snowmelt, mid to late spring day trips are commercially available on the Toutle.
