San Juan Islands - Biking

The islands are a good
place to take a relaxed
cruise around by
bike. With the exception of Mt. Constitution on Orcas Island, most of
the roads are relatively flat. Rent bikes and mopeds when you get to
the San Juans or bring your transportation with you.
Bicyclists are welcome and accepted on the roads of the San Juan
islands, and in most areas a bike is the best method to explore the
many historic farmhouses, ocean inlets, and thrilling sights of eagles
and orcas along the way.
The terrain of the San Juan Islands vary, but on a whole Orcas
Island has many more difficult (steep) roads than either San Juan
Island or Lopez Island. San Juan Island is the most populated island,
and consequentially requires safe road biking practices. Lopez Island
is the least populated of the major islands, which can make for a more
pleasant ride. Some of the smaller islands may require a private or
chartered boat to reach, but the bicyclist will be rewarded with open
roads, thrilling sights, and fresh air. The San Juan Islands have
remarkably good weather year round, but the islands can often be cold
and the roads slick in the winter. The best time to bicycle or travel
the islands via moped are the spring and fall.
Perhaps the best way to explore the islands is to hook up with a
bicycle guide and outfitter. These knowledgeable locals can get you
set up with equipment and other gear, and take you to some of the best
spots on the islands for a one, two, or multiple day trip. Click on
